Getting around Cape Town
Cape Town International Airport is the primary airport serving the city of Cape Town and is the second-busiest airport in South Africa and fifth busiest in Africa. Located approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the city center, it is the only airport in the Cape Town metropolitan area that offers scheduled passenger services. The airport has domestic and international terminals, linked by a common central terminal. The airport has direct flights from South Africa’s other two main urban areas, Johannesburg and Durban, as well as flights to smaller centers in South Africa. Internationally, it has direct flights to several destinations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. The air route between Cape Town and Johannesburg was the world’s ninth-busiest air route in 2011 with an estimated 4.5 million passengers.
Cape Town’s public transport system is active in about 10% of the city, running north to south along the west coastline, comprising Phase 1 of the IRT system. This is known as the MyCiTi service. MyCiTi Phase 1 includes services linking the airport to the inner city, as well as the following areas: Blouberg / Table View, Atlantis and Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Paarden Eiland, Century City, Salt River and Walmer Estate, and all suburbs of the City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard all the way to Llandudno and Hout Bay.
A wide selection of car hire companies services the city. Many have offices at the Cape Town International Airport, so hiring a car is fast and easy on arrival. Various metered taxi services, e-hailing transport providers, luxury airconditioned coaches and privately-operated shuttle buses run between the airport, hotels, the city center and most major tourist destinations
